PROGRESS
On this task, we were required to explore various aspects of everyday design. As creative media students, your task is to document and communicate your experiences through a TikTok page and Creating the Product based on the Sketches you have done on Project 1 and 2. This page should serve as a cultural journal, where you record, reflect, and creatively present your interactions, observations, and insights about everyday design. The goal is to communicate your chosen cultural topics to a broader audience, fostering understanding and appreciation of everyday design through engaging short-form videos.
Requirements :
1. Create a Presentation Deck that Consist of :
- Introduction to your project
- 200 word rationale (that you did during Task 1)
- Summary of your data collection (more like a recap of things you did during Task 2)
- Progress of your final project (it could be sketches, digital progression, or anything as long as it shows the progress of your final output - if it's video then your behind-the-scene for example).
- Final output
- Link to your e-portfolio(s) - individual links
- Link to your TikTok account
2. A 10 Minutes (Maximum) Recorded Presentation, Presenting your Projects.

2. Visual references
Based on the pictures and information collected on the internet for making a butterscotch gel phone case and the research on peranakn motif and pattern done in the first two tasks, we searched for the following visual references from the internet as references for our sketches.
- The cucuk sanggul as a reference for the hairpin body.
- The phoenix element of kebaya dress as a reference for the decorative element of the phone case.
- The clashing colors of pink and blue from peranakan tile as the color reference of our phone case and its geometric pattern.

3. Sketch
Here is the sketch progress. We made some sketch based on our research in project 2.
Mr. Zeon gave us feedback on Friday, suggesting that we explore our sketches further. Only the second sketch was approved, but he mentioned that some modifications were needed. Jessie quickly refined the second sketch and the hairpin design, as having only flowers would make the design too plain. He advised us to incorporate more elements from the research we did in Task 2. Check out the images below to see the improvements we made to our sketches.
Here is the final progress.

4. Product Rational
Our product represents a unique blend of cultural heritage and modern-day fashion, with a Peranakan-inspired phone caseand a culturally significant hairpin design. The phone case brings together Peranakan references to floral and fauna elements, and geometric patterns. Additionally, the hairpin design draws from Cucuk Sanggul (a traditional Peranakan hairpin) along with Zanhua (a Minnan Chinese floral hairpin).
To make it more compact, we want to combine these two items by inserting the hairpin in the hole of the cream glue in the phone case. In this way, the hairpin can be worn as a standalone decorative ornament or attached to the phone case as an interesting decorative functional embellishment. The user can engage in heritage in an authentic and stylish way while transforming historic crafts into a modern day fashion statement.
With such reinterpretation of meaningful symbols into common items, we can allow people to express their cultural pride in the manifestation of their style. This project proof of how traditional craftsmanship could fit in so well to be of modern utility, thus keeping heritage cool, relevant, and very much accessible in the race of modernity.
5. Making Process - Phone Case
We chose to meet offline for making. We start by painting a solid color background on the phone case using acrylic paints and then add peranakan elements on top. When the painting dries, use resin to make the quality good. finally, I add a cream gel border to make the artwork more attractive.
But due to the feedback from Mr. Zeon, some details were not perfect, so Jessie redrawn the first phone case.

6. Making Process - Hairpin
I, ruining, jiayue, and yiming used ultralight clay to pinch the petals and assemble them.

For the 1st hairpin, since the peony size is too bigger, we need to reduce it by removing some petals, and they created a second flower which is Yellow lotus.
And here is the flower we made

For the second hairpin, we're using stone powder clay since we need the result to be hard. We shape it using hand and utility knife for the motif.

Tik Tok Video
I wrote a script for the video, but it had too much narration.
So, Tracy helped write another new story board.
I am responsible for appearing in the Tik Tok videos.

Regarding on the tiktok name and profile, we named it "Nyonya Chic 21" Since our theme is peranakan and minnan, but focusing more to peranakan. All of the members were girls, which it means "Nyonya" in Peranakan.
Meanwhile "Chic" words means stylish, fashionable, and elegant. It's a formal word from French to describes something that looks trendy, sophisticated, and effortlessly cool. Last, "21" is our group number.
For the profile, Tracy used a simple and easily recognizable design. She used an image of a beluga cat and decorated it with Cucuk Sanggul, kebaya, and peony flowers because these are the main elements of our theme.

FEEDBACK
Week 6
Since the materials we purchased didn't arrive before Thursday, I requested to postpone our consultation, but then sir told me that it's not possible to skip the final sketch step and go straight to the final product. And the final sketch requires multiple attempts.
Week 7
Sir gave us suggestions to revise the sketch, he wanted us to have more than one final product, he wanted us to make one more cell phone case and one more hairpin. And told us what we need to pay attention to in the final work.
REFLECTION
Experience
It was a difficult yet interesting experience, from the initial field research to create the proposal for the whole project, to the final production of the final product, all of which impressed me a lot. Of course, I was most impressed by the teamwork of our group, as we overcame many obstacles together to complete the final challenge. At first, I wasn't sure about the final product, but as we delved deeper into the heart of the culture and explored the mysteries of the peranakan based on mr. Zeon's advice, we produced beautiful, modern, yet authentic phone cases and hairpins that are true to the peranakan culture.
The most important thing I learned was to incorporate the peranakan motifs we learned from our research into our sketches. It was a fun process. In task 2, we had already done our research in great detail.
In task 2, we had already done our research in detail. However, it was still difficult to reflect our research in the design, which required us to harmonize the various peranakan motifs.
I would like to thank all of my group members for their hard work and also thank Mr. Zeon for all the feedback that helped us improve our work and solve problems!
Observation
I have experience in making cream phone cases and drip cases before, but this is the first time I have used acrylics and kept the original brushstrokes on a phone case. This requires strong drawing skills. The process of designing the peranakan elements that we researched onto the phone cases and hairpin was another opportunity to deeply experience the peranakan culture. I observed that peranakan culture is all about saturated, vibrant colors. Pink, blue and yellow colors make people happy, and with the phoenix symbolizing wealth and prosperity, it quietly conveys that all motifs in Nyonya culture symbolize the hope and desire for a better life in the future!
Finding
Apart from the cultural knowledge I learned in this course, what impressed me more was the teamwork with the group. Since I had to work with my group to complete the course, I realized that I needed to keep communicating with my group members at all times. During the process, we also encountered many difficulties, but all members would actively participate in the communication and discuss the solutions together, and all members were actively involved. Demonstrate excellent teamwork ability, dedication.
