    Week 4

After discussion, we decided to go to the Baba-Nyonya Museum in Malacca for field research. I created a guide for the trip to Malacca, I found local restaurants with unique Nyonya flavors and kebaya clothing stores, and planned the itinerary for the trip.

We took a bus from TBS to Malacca in the morning of 2.27. Upon arrival in Malacca, we went to Heritage Flavour to experience the local Nyonya cuisine. In this restaurant, there are a lot of Nyonya ceramics, these are very Nyonya, green and pink ceramics, we can also see some Chinese elements. These can be our reference.

Then, we experienced Nyonya dishes, such as the very special Ikan Masam Manis, which are sweet and sour and different from the local Malaysian specialties, with a different flavor.

Afterwards, we headed to the baba Nyonya Museum for a research tour.

Here we learn about the real, original Nyonya way of life and living. The Chinese culture of the Qing Dynasty had a profound influence on Peranakan culture. The influence of the Qing Dynasty on Peranakan culture can be seen in the floral kebaya costumes on Peranakan porcelain and the peony and phoenix motifs on the cucuk sanggul. What we need to focus on is the hairlpin in peranakan culture, but there is not much to learn about it in the museums. So, we can only do in-depth research online.

After that, we were going to visit the owner of baba housu museum in the hope that she would be able to accept our interview, but unfortunately, she was not in Melaka. So, we searched for some stores related to Nyonya culture in Cockatoo Street, expecting to find someone in these stores who could accept our interview. Eventually, we found the owner of Joe's Design Handcrafted Jewellery, Mr. Joe, who is a native Malaccan who understands the Nyonya culture and is familiar with the life in Malacca, willing to accept our interview.

I recorded the whole interview. I learned that Nyonya culture not only includes Chinese and Malaysian cultures, but also Indonesian and some cultures from Europe.Mr.Joe thinks that nowadays many people treat Nyonya culture as a business, and very few people will understand it in depth. He thinks it is an interesting idea to use cell phone cases as a vehicle for cultural dissemination. But as for the cucuk sangul, he is very sad to see people wearing it on the street in their everyday clothes, but it is usually worn during weddings or important ceremonies.

We took a group photo with Mr.Joe to end the interview and thank him very much for accepting our group's interview.

    Week 5

    Interview

We malacca field study process interviewed Mr. Joe. I prepared the interview questions in advance.
    fig.9 Interview Questions

After our interview, tracy organized the content.

    Survey

We decided to find out more about it by means of a survey. All members of the group took on the responsibility of distributing the survey. Quantitative data from a wider range of opinions can be easily collected through survey. We will choose the survey method to find out the public's opinion, preference and awareness of Nyonya and Minnan design elements in daily products.

    Survey Distribution :

    • The surveys were distributed by all members in the group through social media (Whatsapp, Wechat)

    • Distribution period : 28/02/2025 - 02/03/2025

    • Total Responses : 58 Responses

We have written more about our findings in the data collection document.

    Online Research

We are adding research on the web that is missing in the field research.

We lacked in-depth research on peranakan hairpin.
I created a study on the pattern patterns on Nyonya tiles and kebaya costumes, and a comparative study of Nyonya hairpin and minnan hairpin surrounds. And finalize the PPT and the slides with tracy.

After my research, I found that most of the motifs that appear on peranakan cloths and peranakan tiles are the same. These motifs are usually peony, phoenix, lotus, chrysanthemum. These patterns symbolize wealth, prosperity and the desire of the peranakan people for a better life.

    FEEDBACK

    Week 4

There is little research on cucuk sanggul, and it needs to be supplemented.
We need to conduct a survey with at least 50 responses.

    Week 5

    1. We should add analysis on peranakan pattern in the textile or the ceramic tile (online research)
    - Get the symbolism of each pattern
    - Why the pattern placed on the textile or the ceramic tile
    2. Contrast :peranakan hairpin & Minnan Zanhua hairin
    3. the cloud in the sketch can change to more peranakan patterns
    4. In the TikTok video, just focus on the peranakan culture( or add one or two video to talk about the difference between Minnan and peranakna)
    5. Everyone E-portfolio link should be submit on Sunday , but will mark at Week 7
    6. The final project should have more peranakan elements ,and We need to make a different, special design that is exclusive to Peranakan
    7. Maybe add some texture on the flower make them more peranakan

    REFLECTION

    Experience

For this project, we traveled to Malacca to conduct field research. It was fun to go out and do research with my group members and improve our mutual understanding and bonding. We experienced Nyonya cuisine in a restaurant and visited a museum together. I think this experience was precious and it was the first time that I went to a place with my classmates to do field research in the middle of a semester. After that, we realized that research on cucuk sanggul was missing in our field research, so we overcame the difficulties together and chose online research to make up for it. In order to enrich our research, we made many efforts, observation method, field interview, survey.

    Observation / Finding

In this process, I found that survey was helpful in understanding the results of the research we did. But most importantly, it requires us to have a deep understanding of the topic of our chosen culture, which is important for the production of our final product. We needed to be very careful to understand the culture we chose. More specifically, we chose two cultures, so we need to not only do a longitudinal study, but also a longitudinal comparison when doing our research, which will make our research more convincing and will complete our overall chain of research.
