The song we chose is 《Closer》 by The Chainsmokers.

Below are the lyrics and breakdown of the song we selected.

Initially, our group decided on the overall theme colors and font direction. Based on the song's mood, we chose a dreamy, nighttime-like blue-purple color scheme, such as lavender, periwinkle, Atlantis blue, and dark blue, giving the visuals a cool, romantic, and slightly nostalgic feel. A unified color scheme made the lyrics sections, which were the responsibility of different group members, appear more cohesive and less like separate works.

Regarding the font, we experimented with several different styles, including the clean Oswald font and more handwritten, line-based fonts. Ultimately, we wanted the font to be both clear and evocative, so we used a more distinctive handwritten/outline font for the titles and key lyrics, while keeping the supporting text simple and legible. This stage primarily established the visual direction of the entire motion graphic, ensuring that everyone maintained a consistent color scheme, font, and style when creating the animations.

For this part, I created the kinetic typography for “CLOSER” using a dark blue solid background to build a nighttime atmosphere that matches the mood of the song. I duplicated the text layers to create an echo / motion-trail effect, then adjusted their scale, position, opacity, and rotation to add movement and depth.

The front text was kept bright and clear, while the duplicated layers behind it were enlarged and reduced in opacity to create a sense of rhythm. I also used Null Objects to control the overall movement more efficiently, allowing the text layers to pulse, scale, and fade together with the beat.

Guides and rulers were used to keep the composition balanced. This section focuses on creating a bold, energetic, and rhythmic visual effect while maintaining the nighttime mood of “Closer.”

For this lyric section, I separated “In the back seat of your Rover” into individual text layers so each word could be animated with the beat. I arranged “OF YOUR” as supporting text at the top, while “ROVER” was enlarged in the centre to create the main visual focus and hierarchy.

To strengthen the motion, I duplicated the ROVER layer and adjusted the opacity and position to create an echo / motion-trail effect. I also used a Null Object to control the grouped movement more efficiently, allowing the text to pulse, scale, rotate, and fade with the rhythm.

Overall, this section uses bold typography, layered motion, and beat-based animation to make ROVER the strongest visual moment in the lyric.

For this lyric section, I focused on using enlarged words and fast in-and-out motion to match the quick rhythm of the song. The lyrics were separated into individual text layers, allowing key words such as “ CAN’T,” “TATTOO,” and “SHOULDER” to become the main visual focus.

Instead of showing the full sentence in one fixed layout, I animated one or two words at a time. I used position, rotation, and opacity keyframes to create quick entrance and exit movements, making the typography feel more energetic and beat-based. Some words were scaled up to create emphasis, while others appeared briefly as supporting text.

I also adjusted the timing of each text layer on the timeline so the words entered in sequence with the lyrics. This helped create a fast, rhythmic visual flow and made the animation feel more connected to the music. Overall, this part focuses on strong word emphasis, quick transitions, and dynamic typography movement.

For this lyric section, I focused on creating a stronger sense of space by using a 3D text effect. I separated the lyrics into individual text layers, then adjusted their position, scale, rotation, and opacity to make the words move in and out of the frame with more depth.

The words were placed at different angles and positions to avoid a flat layout. By using 3D rotation and quick keyframe changes, the typography appears to shift through space, creating a more dynamic and layered visual effect.

I also adjusted the timing of each text layer on the timeline so the words appear according to the rhythm of the lyrics. Overall, this section focuses on using 3D movement, spatial composition, and fast transitions to make the animation feel more immersive and energetic.

For this lyric section, I separated “From your roommate back in Boulder” into individual text layers so the words could appear in sequence with the beat. I used a Null Object to control the grouped movement more efficiently and keep the animation consistent.

The main words, especially “ROOMMATE” and “BOULDER,” were emphasized through larger scale and stronger placement. I animated the scale, position, and opacity to create quick entrance effects, making each word appear more rhythmically with the music.

Some words were given special entrance timing to create variation instead of using the same motion for every layer. Overall, this section focuses on using Null Object control, scale changes, and beat-based word appearance to create a dynamic lyric transition.

For this repeated lyric section, I used a repetition-based typography effect to match the repeated line in the song. I duplicated the word “GETTING” “OLDER”and arranged the layers vertically to create a rolling / stacked text movement.

To make the repetition feel more rhythmic, I adjusted the position, opacity, and timing of each text layer so the words appear one after another. The front text is darker and clearer, while the repeated layers behind it are lighter, creating depth and motion.

I also used Null Objects to control the grouped movement more efficiently and keep the animation consistent. Overall, this section focuses on repetition, rolling text arrangement, and beat-based movement to visually express the repeated lyric “We ain’t ever getting older.”

We have completed the production of the Post-Chorus + Second Chorus. Below are the final versions of both parts.

Later, I combined all the members part:

FEEDBACK

WEEK 7

General Feedback:

In Week 7, Mr. Martin briefly introduced the content of the Gestalt Principles in Design lecture. During the class, Martin also checked each group’s motion graphic progress and recipe illustration development. He gave feedback on how to improve both the visual consistency and the clarity of the animation.

Specific Feedback:

For our motion graphic, Martin reminded us that the overall colour palette and visual style should be consistent across all group members’ parts. He also mentioned that we should avoid showing too many words at the same time, because it makes the screen feel crowded and harder to read. We need to improve the motion effects by making the text animation smoother, clearer, and more connected to the rhythm of the song.

WEEK 8

General Feedback:

In Week 8, Martin reviewed our group’s lyric motion graphic progress and gave feedback on the overall typography and visual composition. He reminded us that the text layout on each page needs to be more carefully arranged so the motion graphic looks more balanced and readable. The spacing between words should support the rhythm of the song and make the lyrics easier for the audience to follow.

Specific Feedback:

For the specific feedback, Martin pointed out that some pages had too much empty space between the text, while some words were placed too close together. Therefore, we need to improve the text arrangement by adjusting spacing, size and position. He also suggested that if the post-chorus part feels too simple or boring, we can add different visual effects to certain important words, such as scale changes, rotation, blur, color contrast or repeated motion, to make the animation more dynamic and interesting.
