PROJECT 2A: DOUBLE EXPOSURE (10%)
W7: COLOUR THEORY

In this week's tutorial PPT, the steps for creating double exposure were discussed. I applied these steps in both the Practical and Project assignments.

LECTURE

RGB is used to display on the computer screen. It is the three primary colors of light, which means that all colors of light can be mixed by these three colors.

CMYK ( Cyan, Magenta, Yellow, Black) is used to printing. It is created by the sbustraction of light.

Hue means pure colour.
Shade means pure colour add black.
Tone means pure colour add grey.
Tint means pure colour add White.

  • Colour Harmony

Color harmony in design refers to the balanced and aesthetically pleasing interaction of colors. Color harmony is not only about attractive colors but their impact on the overall design.

Monochrome: It is achieved by a single color and its different tones.

Analogous: Three colours side-by-side around the colour wheel.

Complementary: They are directly opposite on the wheel.

Split-Complementary:  It used two colors across the color wheel, with those two colors lying on either side of the complementary color

Triadic: Mostly used to create visual contrast.

  • The Psychology of Color

Colors have the ability to convey emotions, and different colors convey different emotions. For example, green brings people a vibrant and positive emotional experience.

Brown
Brown gives people a warm, calm and natural feeling, and it often reminds people of trees and forests. People often wear brown clothes in autumn and winter. Last autumn, a brown color called "Maillard color" became popular. Autumn is a harvest season for China, because the crops planted in the fields are ripe at this time, such as rice, and the color of ripe rice is golden brown. Fallen leaves are also brown. So brown is very suitable for autumn, which also means that brown can bring people a sense of stability and comfort, create a relaxed atmosphere, and bring people a warm and dependent mood.

Blue
Blue usually gives a calm, fresh and rational feeling. Because blue is similar to the sky and the ocean, it gives people an impression of calmness, peace and freedom. It also has the effect of calming and soothing emotions, making people feel calm and focused. In life, blue usually reminds people of the sky, so while blue brings people a sense of comfort, it also gives people a sense of restraint and distance, and sometimes even a sense of mystery. Blue can also build a sense of trust, so it is widely used in technology brands and the medical industry. Blue-toned scenes and decorations are also suitable for regulating stress and helping to concentrate, so they are considered to be very rational and harmonious.

  • Warm VS Cool

Warm colors refer to red, orange, yellow, purple, brown, etc. These colors are passionate and unrestrained and make people feel warm.
Cool colors mainly include cyan, blue, green, blue-purple, etc. These colors have a sense of quietness and stability

Warm colors include red, orange and yellow, as well as all variations of these three colors. They are full of energy, passion and positivity. The emotions reflected by warm colors are: passion, happiness, enthusiasm, vitality. At the same time, they can also be used as danger signals.

Cool colors include green, blue and purple, as well as all variations of these three colors. These colors and their shapes are the colors of night, water and nature, and are usually associated with calmness and relaxation.

  • Black & White

Black is often used in text. It adds a sense of maturity and elegance, while also adding a sense of mystery. White can be matched with almost any color, and can assist other colors to achieve the desired effect.

PRATICAL

I followed the steps in the tutorial PPT and video to make it.

First, use the Magic Wand Tool to select the subject in the image and click Select and Mask to adjust the selection.Adjust the details around the hair, eyes and lips.Output in the mode of New Layer with Layer Mask.
Add the background. And adjust the portrait layer curves like this.

Add the forest image and make a clipping mask to the portrait layer. And unmask her face.

I made a mistake here and didn't adjust it to the right position, so after duplicating the layer and inverting it, part of the subject's body was not covered.

After those adjustment, the image is like this.

Add the bird, forest and cloud pictures and adjust them to the appropriate position. And select a gradient color. My gradient data does not have the same color as the video, so I try to make a gradient myself.

After some adjustment, I try to combination face and the background better.

My Double Exposure

Inspiration 4

These are the inspirations I found on Pinterest.
Process

First, I imported the photos I used for creating the double exposure. I clicked on the Channel Mixer under adjustments to convert the photo to black and white. Then, I used the Magic Wand tool to select the subject and refined the edges. Afterward, I created a new layer with a layer mask.

Duplicate the layer and apply a motion blur filter to enhance the background around the subject.

Some efforts for the design.
At first, I wasn’t sure how to create a double exposure effect. Although I found some inspiration on Pinterest, there was a gap between my ideas and the actual execution. I realized that some ideas couldn’t be achieved as planned. Initially, I wanted to create a vibrant floral background, similar to the look of Inspiration 1. Later, I changed my mind and aimed for the style of Inspiration 3. However, after studying it closely, I found that Inspiration 3 used two related photos—a close-up and an action shot of the same person wearing the same outfit—creating a double exposure of a still and a dynamic image. In contrast, my two photos were from separate scenes with no connection between them. In the end, I decided to base my double exposure on the style of Inspiration 4.

I downloaded these two photos from Pinterest to create the design.

Apply one image to the hair and another to the clothing. Flip the image used for the clothing so the trees appear as if they are patterns embedded in the fabric.

Add curves, levels, and gradient mapping to the main layer of the character to blend the character more seamlessly with the image.

Add some details, including an overlay of flying birds.

Later, I felt the design lacked a strong theme, so I made some adjustments. I replaced the forest photo in the hair with an image of Chongqing, as I am from Chongqing, China. The golden Twin Towers and Chongqing Raffles City are iconic landmarks of Chongqing, showcasing the city’s unique character. The forest photo below complements the idea of Chongqing as a "Mountain City."

Add curves to alter the overall effect of the image.

Add a texture to enrich the background.

I felt the composition was still somewhat flat and didn’t fully align with the theme, so I later added an image of Chongqing’s landscape as the background on top of the texture.

Add curves to enhance the overall integration of the image. Then, add a blue gradient map. Incorporate images of flying birds and clouds to enrich the composition.
