TUTORIAL

Photography Basics in 10 Minutes

Exposure Triangle
The three key elements that control exposure:

  • Shutter Speed: Fast for freezing motion, slow for capturing movement.
  • Aperture: Controls light entry. Large aperture (small f-number) for background blur, small aperture (large f-number) for sharp focus.
  • ISO: Sensitivity to light. Low ISO for clear images in bright light, high ISO for low light but may introduce noise.

Composition Basics

  • Rule of Thirds: Position subjects on gridlines for better balance.
  • Symmetry and Balance: For stable compositions.
  • Foreground and Background: Use them to create depth.
  • Leading Lines: Guide the viewer’s eye.

Lighting

  • Natural Light: Best during golden hour (morning/evening).
  • Artificial Light: Flash or continuous lighting to control direction.
  • Lighting Directions: Front light is flat, side light adds texture, backlight creates silhouettes.

LECTURE

In this lecture, we talked about some rules that a designer must to follow when we want to create an effective and attractive composition.

When we design, we don’t need to be too rigid. Sometimes, in order to create something eye-catching, we will ignore one or more principles.

The 7 Principles of Poster Design

Emphasis
The key of EMPHASIS is what element the designer wants to highlight in the picture and what information that designer wants to convey. Designers need to organize the design and emphasize different elements to different degrees according to their importance.

Balance and Alignment
Designers need to make the elements and objects in the picture look orderly and balanced by arranging the different parts of the design.

Contrast
it means the visual difference between two objects makes them stand out. Contrast helps make a design easier to understand which is important for signage.

Repetition
It helps people remember the design and makes the picture look unified. Applying the same characteristics to the same objects creates a visually appealing and consistent design.

Proportion
It means the size and weight of the elements in the design relative to each other.

Movement
It does not refer to motion, but how people's eyes move through the design. We need to make sure that the audience appreciates the entire design from beginning to end in the correct order. These manipulations can be colors, flowing lines, or curved shapes that draw the eye to move through the design.

White Space
white space and negative space is the blank or unused area in the design. It prevents the picture from looking too cluttered

Exercise 3

I selected this photo of Lisa from the library as the black and white photo for my practice.

I searched for some pictures of Lisa on Google Chrome for color guidance and selected the following pictures as references

I followed the steps in the previous video to do this exercise

Step 1: Hair

Select the range, establish the silhouette, choose the brown colour for the hair.

Step 2: Face and Neck

Some efforts for the selection

After selection

When it came to the step of selecting colors, I encountered some difficulties. I filled the selection with the color I had previously referenced and used the Overlay filter. At this time, the color displayed on the screen was very strange, the color of the picture was very flat, and there was almost no light and dark contrast.

Efforts to add shadows

So later, I added details of the shadows and highlights locally to make the picture look more natural.

Step 3: Arm

Select the selected areas and adjust the colors.

There are some difficulties here. There is some hair on the arm in the upper left corner of the picture. The clarity is not high, which makes it difficult to select and create a silhouette. Finally, after several adjustments, it is possible to accurately create a selection area.

Adjust the color of multiple layers little by little to adjust the light and dark relationship in the picture

The final effect is like this.

Step 4: Mouth

For the lips, first outline the lips and adjust the color and filter.

Add teeth and mouth color.

Step 5: Eyes
Add dark gray to add a mixed feeling

Step 6: Cloth

Step 7: Wall

Some efforts for selecting the range of Wall.

Choose a summer colour

Final

Above is my final work for the exercise 3.
